About Dr. Peterson

Why learn about personality?

Every single day you have to deal with yourself as well as other people in your family, work and romantic relationships, and everyone is a personality.

People are different and of course, it's difficult to get a handle on that because you see the world through your own "eyes" or particular personality. The differences in personality, although frustrating, are completely necessary. Part of the utility of the diversity is that different problems emerge at different times and the probability that you'll encounter problems that you can't solve is highly likely - in which case you'll highly benefit from understanding yourself and others and how you can cooperate to solve the increasing complex problems of the world.

Therefore, the more you understand yourself and the more you understand other people, the better off you are going to be in the world and the more likely is that your plans will come to fruition. Also, the more you do that, the less frustration and disappointment you're going to experience.

What is the Big Five Personality Model?

When factor analysis (a statistical technique) is applied to personality survey data, some words used to describe aspects of personality are often applied to the same person. For example, someone described as conscientious is more likely to be described as "always prepared" rather than "messy". This theory uses descriptors of common language and therefore suggests five broad dimensions commonly used to describe the human personality and psyche:
