Dr. Jordan B. Peterson is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, a clinical psychologist and the author of the multi-million copy bestseller 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, #1 for nonfiction in 2018 in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, Brazil and Norway, and now slated for translation into 50 languages.
“The most influential public intellectual in the western world right now.”
Every single day you have to deal with yourself as well as other people in your family, work and romantic relationships, and everyone is a personality.
People are different and of course, it's difficult to get a handle on that because you see the world through your own "eyes" or particular personality. The differences in personality, although frustrating, are completely necessary. Part of the utility of the diversity is that different problems emerge at different times and the probability that you'll encounter problems that you can't solve is highly likely - in which case you'll highly benefit from understanding yourself and others and how you can cooperate to solve the increasing complex problems of the world.
Therefore, the more you understand yourself and the more you understand other people, the better off you are going to be in the world and the more likely is that your plans will come to fruition. Also, the more you do that, the less frustration and disappointment you're going to experience.
Simply put, anyone who is interested in improving themselves will find the information presented in this course incredibly valuable and practical.
This 5-hours densely-packed course contains a combination of theory and narrative so that it's easy to follow and appropriate for anyone that's interested in the subject, while still being intellectually challenging so anyone can take this course, even without pre-existing knowledge about the topic.
This course is based on the Big Five Personality Model. The Big Five personality traits, also known as the five-factor model (FFM) and the OCEAN model, is a taxonomy for personality traits. When factor analysis (a statistical technique) is applied to personality survey data, some words used to describe aspects of personality are often applied to the same person. For example, someone described as conscientious is more likely to be described as "always prepared" rather than "messy". This theory uses descriptors of common language and therefore suggests five broad dimensions commonly used to describe the human personality and psyche:
Discover what are the biological strengths and weaknesses in your personality and what you can do about them to thrive in the world.
Be able to deal and interact with people around you that have different personalities.
Understand what creates negative emotion based on your personality and how to cope with it and it's associated disorders like depression, anxiety and others.
Understand the gender differences in personality, and the sociological, political, and economic ramifications of these differences.
Increase your ability to improve in all aspects of your life from your work, to your personal development, career, relationships and even parenthood.
“This course is a toolkit for operating in the world, in your intimate relationships, and in your business relationships. You will find more information here than you would find in the typical full-scale one semester personality course...”
This introductory lecture goes into the background of how the course was created. These lectures are the result of a lot of thinking, arguing, refining, and growing in the years throughout which Dr. Peterson taught at university as well as in his public speeches so the result is new insights on the Big5 Model and the science of personality that are valuable for the present day.
This lecture introduces the philosophical, psychological, and neurobiological underpinnings of personality as well as the benefits of understanding personality to better deal with yourself and others
Personalities are evolved solutions to the problem of a complex world. They are filters on our perception, cognition, and motivation that influence our actions in the world.
This lecture Introduces the five-factor model of personality you will study in this series as well as discussing why it's a "concept killer" and how the robust theory of this model subsumes most of the other concepts from personality literature.
“The concept of grit, for example, is essentially the same as conscientiousness, meaning it doesn’t measure anything you can’t get from conscientiousness. The concept of self-esteem is positive emotion (extraversion) minus negative emotion (neuroticism).”
Learn about the first of the big five personality traits: Extraversion. Understand the two aspects that describe extraversion as well as be able to know how happy you should be if things are going well and how upset should you be when things are going wrong.
Introducing the personality dimension of neuroticism, which is also known as the tendency to experience negative emotion.
Dr. Peterson discusses the consequences of excessive negative emotion, how negative emotion manifests in childhood, and strategies for overcoming depression and anxiety.
This lecture also discusses a wide range of traits associated with neuroticism and how you can cope with negative emotions.
This lecture goes in-depth about the personality trait of agreeableness. High agreeableness is associated with maternal care, while low agreeableness is linked with predatory social behaviour. Is one better than the other?
“There is an obvious language bias that makes it sound like being agreeable is better, but there are pronounced advantages and disadvantages to being at any point on the spectrum.”
Understand the gender differences in personality, and the sociological, political, and economic ramifications of these differences.
Also, understand the personality traits distributions in men and women in different societies and the debate between nature and nurture in regard to gender differences in personality
Discover how consciousness shapes your life and your career and why it's historically the biggest predictor of modern day success.
Also, understand why conscientious people are more sensitive to disgust - and the fascinating socio-political ramifications of this association.
And in terms of the work environment, there are two main types of people who will help a business to succeed, and a good business needs both.
Learn about openness to experience, the personality trait counts for being creative, curious and intellectual. Also, learn about how people who are high in openness behave and see the world and the distribution of IQ, creativity and openness to experience around the world’s population with it's the social implications.
The Big Five Model is backed up by the most amount of valid scientific research, making it the most reliable model for personality traits. A lot of other models will bring about unpredictable results when taken again after a short period of time (4-5 weeks) and do not always have the right questions that will help give an accurate representation of your personality when answered.
